I honestly can say that I had little or no experience with Avatar, until they showed up to Steelhouse in Omaha on April 25th. I don’t know how they slipped through the cracks for me, but they did. I had heard of them, and that is about it. I was excited at the aspect of covering them because the little I did know is that they are a visually appealing band. And as a photographer that is always intriguing for me. I had little or no expectation otherwise.
All that being said, I have to say that Avatar is my favorite show of the year so far. They were above and beyond any expectation I had. The songs were all great with strong riffs and catchy choruses. To be honest my plan was to leave after a few songs and make my drive back to York, 90 miles away. I could not get my self to leave early. They were just too damn good.
From a photo point of view they were awesome to shoot. But I was done after three songs with that. The music kept me there the rest of the night. Avatar is from Molndal, Sweden, formed in 2001. They are currently on tour for their latest release “Don’t Go In The Forest”, released late last year.
They have a strong fan base in Omaha that showed up in force on this night. It was loud, rowdy, and the fans were banging their heads to every beat. There was some moshing and crowd surfing too. It was a great 17 song set that definitely gave the crowd their money’s worth. Some of my favorites “The Dirt I’m Buried In”, “Torn Apart” and the set closer “Hail the Apocalypse”. Lead vocalist Johannes Eckerstrom has the the charisma to captivate the audience from start to finish. He was non stop motion.
You need to check these guys if you get the chance. They are one of the best shows I’ve seen in awhile. I can say that I am definitely a fan now. I am looking forward to what they do next!
